Computer Maintenance
Computers need looking after if they are to provide secure reliable service. Unlike televisions or many other electronic devices computers need regular attention. In part this is due to their complex nature and the fact that they perform so many different functions. As software is used sometime not in the way the writers intended bugs and errors are found in the code. These are fixed by the software vendors and released as a patch. It is these bugs that the writers of viri count on to enable their programs to spread. Having an anti virus program is a good idea but the underlying software still needs the fixes applied to prevent continued attack.
Spyware or Malware
There is a growing problem with programs that install themselves onto unmaintained unpatched computers without the users knowledge. These programs either hijack the computer settings for the writers own purpose, or more worryingly allow 3rd parties to monitor or control the computer without the owners knowledge. These programs are called Spyware or Malware and they fall into a gap where they are neither identified or removed by anti virus programs or software updates. Many of these programs are poorly written and can cause very serious instability on the systems they compromise.
Our service
We like to arrange a monthly visit to clients premises to apply the latest software patches. We use special tools to remove Spyware and inoculate computers to prevent further breaches. We also check how securely the computers are configured and will tighten the security on each computer. This might sound like an excessive approach but as we monitor software bug reports and security advisories daily we are well informed as the scale of the problems and the number of malicious people to hope to gain by finding and exploiting problems.
